Statistical software development company, SAS, has been voted the best place to work by Forbes Magazine. This Cary NC based company has been on the list for the past thirteen years; however this is the first time it holds the top position.

New School Board Ends Mandatory Year-Round Schools

The new Wake County School board voted to end year-round school assignments starting with the 2010-2011 school year. Making good on campaign promises, the new board has pushed for this controversial policy change since being elected. Along with the change comes cheers and criticism.
A year round schedule was implemented for 22 middle and elementary schools two years ago. The goal was to help ease overcrowding issues by allowing school buildings to be used year round. Many complain that this edict was only a temporary fix and that it never addressed the bigger issue of overcrowded schools. New Wake County School Board Faces Tough Issues

The Wake County School Board has been garnering a great deal of attention lately thanks to the new directions the newly elected board seems to be taking. In fact, there are two major issues that have become topics of major debate: doing away with the current busing routes in an effort to create "neighborhood" schools and getting rid of year-round schooling programs.
The proposal to move toward neighborhood schools has sparked a controversy primarily because many believe this step would lead to de-segregation of the schools, which would effectively be taking a step backwards in terms of improving race relations. You may be surprised to learn that Raleigh legislators passed whopping 577 new laws this year, a number of these have gone inito effect December 1,2009. While some of the laws won't affect many of Raleigh's residents, several of them will have a direct impact on the majority of the area's residents. Here are a few of the laws that you should be aware of if you live in Raleigh or plan on visiting the area:
- Automated cameras and videos may be used to prosecute drivers who pass a stopped school bus.
- New penalties have been put into place for drivers who pass a stopped school bus.
- Texting while driving is a misdemeanor that may also result in a $100 fine.

New Walmart in Apex, NC Offers Numerous Conveniences

A new Walmart has recently opened its doors in Apex, North Carolina. Despite the criticisms that the chain has received in the past due to its effects on "mom and pop" stores, there is no doubt that the new Walmart in Apex, NC will have a positive impact on the community's economy. Not only does Walmart have a tradition of giving money back to the local community, but the new store is also bringing hundreds of jobs into the neighborhood while also giving the local real estate market a little boost.
